Special rules
Founding phase
Each player must build both settlements on the same island. This is
then known as their home island, with the other becoming the
neighbour island.
Trade routes
Special victory points are available for trade routes between the
two islands. There are various types of trade routes:
- A direct trade route between one of your buildings and an
opponent's building, using your ships.
- An indirect trade route between one of your buildings and
an opponent's road, using your ships
- A direct trade route between two of your buildings (on
different islands) using your own ships.
- An indirect trade route between one of your buildings and
an opponent's line of ships.
Branches are permitted - if an opponent has a ship line
connecting two buildings on the same island, a line of ships joining
a building on the other island to the opponent's ship line counts as
two indirect trade routes.
Trade routes end at buildings - you cannot claim to have many trade
routes by connecting to one building which is in turn connected to
many others.
Special victory points for trade routes
- Players receive a victory point for each direct trade route they
manage.
- Indirect trade routes "belong" to the player whose ships/roads
form the greater part of the route. If there is a tie, the player
who closes the trade route gets the point.
- If an indirect trade route is broken, the player with the
victory point token for that route must put it back.
